A Book Called Rodeo

--A friend and me @ McCraney Lake, Algonquin Park, ON, Canada, 2017

I didn’t know what the book was at first because the song had no chorus at first.

I sang the song for a friend of mine, on a camping trip, sans chorus. Neither one of us knew what the book was, or what the song meant, but I kept singing it for the whole weekend—and for the decade that followed.

“It’s hard to understand that a book about a band makes a proper man a pauper.” Until you know what the book is.

Now, the song has a chorus, and I know what the book is. I won’t say it out loud. I’d like you to listen and decide for yourself.

You Made Me This Way

—Album cover art by Ian Dunbar

I'll only get bigger
I may be a monster
But baby, you made me this way
—excerpt from You Made Me This Way

You Made Me This Way explores our relationship with monsters, people that we think are real bad, and that wouldn't necessarily exist without us.

The title of the song was originally, My Name Is Jeff Bezos. I pretended I was him when I wrote it, when I used to think he was evil. Then I realized it was me. I'm the monster. So I had to change the title.

Meet The Monster - Launch

—Album cover art by Ian Dunbar

Meet The Monster is out now.

My third album. Thirteen songs. Thirty-eight minutes.

Thank you to everyone who pre-saved it. Now it’s time to listen.

I mean, really listen. There’s a lot going on beneath the surface. The lyrics are layered. When’s the last time you heard a record with nuance?

Don’t just listen. Read between the lines.

✅ All originals
✅ Studio recordings
✅ Professionally mastered

I mixed it myself. Others tried, but in the end, I went with mine. I’m happy with how it turned out. Too many records sound too polished these days. You’ll hear a bit of grit in mine.

Listen now: Stream the album on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon Music, and all the usual suspects.

Or, even better, download the album directly from my music page.

Put on the album. Listen from beginning to end. Then tell me what you found between the lines. And tell somebody else.

If you send this newsletter to a friend and they sign up for LD News, you’ll each get a free song from Meet The Monster.

Meet The Monster is coming

On September 27, I’m releasing Meet The Monster.

Meet The Monster is my third album, and it took three decades to write and rewrite. Then two more years to record, mix and master. I think I lost perspective somewhere along the way, especially during the mixing stage.

13 songs rattled the inside of my cage for a long time. 13 songs starring me, the monster.

The songs are about love, deceit, and regret. Also about, well, being a monster.

I’ll only get bigger
I may be a monster but baby, you made me this way
—excerpt from the album

If you'd like to be one of the first to hear Meet The Monster when it comes out, you can pre-save the album now:

Mordecum Bitchler

Who Is Mordecum Bitchler?

The world is asking.

Who is Mordecum Bitchler?

The answer is simple.

He’s shiny, larger than life, and full of clichés.

He’s a rock ’n’ roll icon. A visionary. A ladies’ man. A musical genius. A man who has broken barriers, shattered boundaries and redefined the very meaning of redefining things.

Sources close to the man (namely Leo) say that Bitchler has been romantically linked to several unnamed celebrities (including the Robert Palmer dancers.)

“I dated them in high school,” Bitchler recalls.

He turned down a major Hollywood role, saying Scorsese was a hack.

He also reportedly pissed off King Charles by refusing to stop playing “Stairway to Heaven” at a private royal function.

The Palace has declined to comment.

Bitchler has not.

“Charlie knew what he was getting into.”

With influences ranging from Dylan to Bowie, Sinatra to Shakespeare, Mordecum Bitchler is poised to become the most important artist of his generation.

Or not.

One thing is certain:

Mordecum Bitchler is a name you won't soon forget.

And if you do, just think of Charlie.

Here we go! ✈️

EDIT - I'm renaming the blog. It's now called LD Blog

This was the original post. You can still sign up for the Reindeer Runways newsletter, and get a free gift to boot! Sign up now.

This post marks the start of a new blog, which is called, Reindeer Runways.

The name was spawned where most good ideas come from: in a bar, where I met a girl who rocked my world. 😎💃

Brilliant, I thought, an airline, open for business, one day a year.

“It was joke,” she said, but I liked the name.

So here we are, at the start of Reindeer Runways—the blog.

Plus, Reindeer Runways—the newsletter, which I plan to publish one day a year.

No sense trying to outdo Santa.
